Bau-Biologie®: Building Biology As long as people have lived on this planet they have had to build themselves shelter. And over thousands of years, they have not only managed to do so, but have created outstanding buildings at the same time. What went wrong so that today we find conditions that make people, living in modern buildings, ill? Why should we have such difficulties recognising the cause of these problems? Why are we unable to relate our physical discomforts to the hazardous conditions existing in our homes and workspaces, or to out improper use of food and clothing? When such problems have been recognised, why are people so apathetic about taking the proper measures to bring about changes necessary to improving their survival? Watch '5 ways your home can make you sick': click here Bau-Biologie is the medium to help people recognise the problems and provide the solutions to overcome them. In 2001 Helmut Ziehe, the father of Bau-Biologie in America came to my sister-in-law's home in Ojai, California and spent the afternoon with us going through the concepts of Bau-Biologie. Helmut was originally an architect in Germany constructing buildings in the conventional way until he came across a Bau-Biologie study programme. What he learned from this caused him to cease being an architect and instead champion Bau-Biologie. He translated the Bau-Biologie course into English, brought it to the USA in 1987 and promoted Bau-Biologie all over the world until he retired in 2004. What is Bau-Biologie? Literally “The relationship between buildings and life”. Bau-Biologie, a term coined in Germany, is a word used to describe a movement promoting the use of healthy building principles as a means to improve living and work spaces and the health of people who occupy them. Bau-Biologie literally means, "Building Biology." Both terms are now used interchangeably and both have exactly the same definition - "how buildings impact life and the living environment." Bau-Biologie is about creating a healthy home from the ground up, or healing one that's already there. The phrase was coined in Germany in a field of building science that investigates the indoor living environment for a variety of irritants. Practitioners consider the living environment as an organism, and believe its functioning can produce a restful or stressful environment. Two of the major areas focused on by practitioners are indoor air quality and electromagnetic fields. A Bau-Biologist is a researcher, architect, engineer, and doctor, all in one. He or she offers a preventive and healing medicine and a creative and unifying influence. A Bau-Biologist is a worker in the global effort to solve the problems that come from modem ways of building and settlement planning—ways that disregard nature and human culture.
