“The role of iodine in the body goes far beyond its function of making thyroid hormones; iodine is related to the ability to resist disease”.   Dr Mark Sircus

Iodine is one of the best natural antibiotics, antiseptics and antivirals available to mankind.  First discovered by Bernard Courtois in 1811 when he isolated the element by adding sulfuric acid to seaweed ashes. The result was a purple vapour that condensed to form dark crystals of iodine.  The name Iodine originates from the Greek work 'iodes', meaning violet.

Never has there ever been a greater need for a safe broad spectrum anti-pathogen agent like iodine. Though iodine kills 90 percent of bacteria on the skin within 90 seconds its use as an antibiotic has been ignored. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, moulds, yeasts, protozoa and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact.

Where do you find Iodine naturally?
Iodine is a trace element, sources of which are found in seawater, in rocks and in certain soils. When you visit the beach you’ll absorb iodine from the sea spray or by eating seaweed (kelp), preferably roasted first.  Other rich food sources include sea fish, shellfish, cow’s milk, asparagus, garlic, cabbage family, beans, broccoli, mushrooms, sesame seeds, spinach, summer squash, kale, Swiss chard, turnip, ginseng root and certain cereals and grains.  The Celtic Sea Salt also contain naturally-occurring iodine (as opposed to inorganic iodine artificially added).Iodine helps make the thyroid hormones that help keep cells and the metabolic rate hearty.

Iodine deficiency
A severe iodine deficiency can bring about developmental brain disorders and severe goitre (thyroid enlargement). Less severe iodine deficiency is linked to goitre and hyperthyroidism (overactive tissue within the thyroid gland). Excessive iodine intake on the other hand is associated with hypothyroidism (underactive tissue), as well as goitre.

There are many areas around the world where iodine must be added to the diet (usually through iodized salts) because the local soils are deficient in iodine.  In the north-east quadrant of the U.S.A. the area around the Great Lakes was once known as the ‘goitre belt’ because the soil is particular iodine-deficient. This resulted in a higher incidence of thyroid cancer, breast cancer, stomach cancer, oesophageal cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer.

"I was shrinking tumours in the early seventies by using thousands of times the RDA on Iodine.  Iodine along with the proper essential fat and additional vitamins will fix just about any thyroid problem." Dr H. Duffy, Sr.

21st Century radiation
The past century has witnessed an upsurge in electromagnetic and radioactive waves causing a wide range of conditions including chronic fatigue and immune diseases as well as a variety of cancers. We are besieged by emissions from small home electrical appliances to gigantic TV, radio, and microwave transmission towers. How do we escape or at least minimise the undisputedly harmful effects of constant bombardment? Well the good news is that nature has a simple solution for you: iodide.  Iodide, a natural salt (an iodine atom with a −1 charge) is the best dietary protection available against radiation.   Found in certain foods it acts as a filter preventing electromagnetic damage through the uptake of radiation by our glandular system and the thyroid. By engulfing bacteria and foreign bodies, the thyroid plays a critical role in maintaining the healthy functions of the immune system.  But, when iodine is insufficient in the body, fluoride takes over disrupting the thyroid functions.  This usually results in weight gain (a healthy thyroid regulates metabolism), fatigue, and depression.

Iodine and women
The consumption of iodine reduces any breast tenderness or breast pain in women that suffer from excess oestrogen. To support breast health, oral iodine, magnesium and selenium, are strongly recommended. Iodine in douches helps treat irritating fungal or bacterial infections.

In the shadow of Mt Merapi, Indonesia’s most active volcano, iodine deficiency is widespread.  The YouTube film “For a Few Pennies More” explains that Iodine is required by the thyroid gland to provide hormones needed to control vital bodily functions.  The most serious damage of iodine deficiency goes unseen.  It takes place in the months before and after birth.  Damage done at this stage of a child’s development is irreversible.  Children are born seriously underweight and there are many stillbirths in children as well as animals.  Iodine deficiency also causes cretinism. Cretins suffer from irreversible physical and mental retardation.  Without the iodine they need, many children simply never perform in school as well as they could.  Many of the ‘iodised salts’ sold in Indonesia contain no iodine at all, the result of salt manufacturer’s negligence.

“The absence of iodine in the human body is a promoter of cancer.  If you have an absence of iodine in the breast, before you get to breast cancer the intermediary disease is fibrocystic breast disease”.   Dr. Jorge D Flechas

“Iodine can increase your energy by up to 300%”.   Dr Bob de Maria

Iodine is not only necessary for the production of thyroid hormone, it is also responsible for the production of all other hormones in the body.  Dr David Brownstein
