The Japanese word Reiki comes from two symbols in the Chinese language to mean ‘life energy’. The practice of Reiki although commonly associated with Japan, may have originated in Tibet, many thousands of years ago, or even Southern India where the Reiki symbols have been discovered amongst the artifacts of the ancient cultures there. Some Reiki masters have found evidence of it in ancient Egypt. Whatever Reiki’s origins, it is clear that the practice was carried along the ancient trade routes.
Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which helps stress reduction and relaxation, in turn promoting healing. It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
Reiki evolved in Japan as a result of the dedication of Dr Mikao Usui. Dr Usui developed this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, meditation and research. He spent the rest of his life travelling throughout Japan, practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.
There is no religion or belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.
You relax, fully clothed, on a couch. The practitioner gently places his/her hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person - body, emotions, mind and spirit - is treated rather than any specific symptoms. A treatment can last in the region of an hour depending on the treatment required.
There is no pressure exerted onto the body making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Receiving a Reiki treatment is a very relaxing and soothing experience!
Treatment is amplified if the client can rest immediately afterwards and drink plenty of water to help the body detox. Be responsive to the needs of your body: rest if tired, and allow the energy to continue its work after the session ends. The beneficial effects may be felt for several days. Many have reported some quite unexpected and welcome results.
