Most nematodes (worms) begin their existence as microscopic eggs and mature

through the larvae stage into worms. As worms, they begin laying more eggs to create new generations.  The larvae become worms within the intestines of the host animal. To avoid detection by the animal’s immune system, the worms travel through the digestive system inside the faecal matter.  When grazing animals defecate the larvae or young worms become ingested by other grazing animals.


Detecting these worms is not easy although there may be tell-tale signs such as weight loss, slow growth or poor coat shine.  Serious infections can bring about ulceration, colic and internal blockages. However if the animal is receiving good nutrition and is generally healthy, the presence of parasites may be difficult to establish.


Horses in particular are affected by many parasite groups, especially roundworm, tapeworm, threadworm and botfly.  Mutual licking or grooming by horses leads to ingestion of eggs that may have become attached to body or mane hair.


Good paddock and pasture management will help decrease the parasitic burden but the animals must ingest anti-parasitic herbs to deal with the fast-reproducing parasites that have established residence in the digestive tract, bloodstream, vital organs, tissue, bones, eyes, or indeed any part of the body.
